Stanhope Park/Green

Stanhope Gardens (Park, Green - it's been called all these things) is a very urban space on the west side of the town.  It is a green rectangle bounded by Stanhope Road, Abbey Road, Vane Terrace and Trinity Road.  One side is the site of the former Queen Elizabeth Grammar School for Boys, now the Sixth Form College, and the former Teacher's Training College for Ladies, at one time an Art Centre and now flats.  The park has two tennis courts lots of seating and planted areas. The area os bounded by a dwarf wall but there are numerous entrances to the park. The other three sides are lined with pleasant, bay-fronted, terraced houses, but immediately behind the Stanhope Road are properties that have little beyond tiny backyards so the Gardens were put in place to give the local residents a green space for leisure - largely funded by the Pease family and subsequently handed over to the council.

The green space is well used by local residents and the students from the Sixth Form College making it a busy hub very close to the town centre. The space was created back in the 1870's so there are now some large, mature trees, however a number of new saplings have been planted by various council projects.
