Darlington's premier park has award-winning flower beds, a lake, bandstand and fountains. South Park is an excellent example of a large Victorian park of 25.59 Ha. It has play areas, a skate park and aviaries. The River Skerne runs through the park and provides a riverside walk all the way into the town and Riverside Park.
There are toilets provided at the South Park Clock tower and a cafe which overlooks the bowling green. There are play parks, a band stand, multi play area and outside gym.
The park is Grade II listed with Historic England https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list. As is Polam Lane Bridge, the Bandstand and the fountain. The fountain is most interesting with a tall terra-cotta structure. Small quatrefoil upper basin, with leafy finial and rests on 4 short columns of polished granite. These rise from a larger finial, basin resting on a short, thick granite column upon a round terra-cotta base. A plaque records its origin at Pierremont House and its presentation to the borough.
