SNIPE POND
SNIPE POND
The main feature of this green space is the large fishing pond that is open to all. It is formed from the settling tanks of Darlington’s first water-borne sewage works. Nature has ‘recovered’ this area with mainly self-set woodland with some planting. Hardened paths have been added for ease of access. This area is well connected with paths to Skerne Park over a bridge and northwards to South Park along the West bank of the River Skerne. This area includes land to the North of a cyclable underpass beneath the A66. To the west of Snipe Pond is the Blackwell golf club where there is a club house which has a bar serving food and has facilities all open to the public. To the north is the Blackwell Hotel and the newly established Blackwell Parkland. Native species, such as spring bulbs, water margin plants at the pond and meadow-sweet in areas subject to regular flooding have been planted in this area.
The sewage works was built in 1878 and closed when the new and larger Stressholme works was opened in 1938. The Friends Group was formed in 2013 and path works completed by 2019.
The main entrance to Snipe Pond is via Snipe Lane what three words ///winter.laying.punks
